Wieghorst leaves Celtic

Morten Wieghorst has ended his six-year stint at Parkhead to join Danish club Brondby on a three year deal. Wieghorst joined Celtic in 1996 from Dundee and had only recently returned from a life-threatening illness to challenge for a first-team place. Martin O'Neill offered the Danish midfielder a new one-year deal to win his place back in midfield, but the lure of a return to Denmark and the offer of three-year contract convinced him to move on.

He played a pivotal role in Wim Jansen's Celtic side which prevented Rangers clinching 10 championships in a row in season 1997-98 - but life took a turn for the worse when he contracted Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Wieghorst has now made a full recovery from the debilitating condition, but has opted to return to his homeland. He told Celtic's official website, "I have had many tremendous years at Celtic, and it just great to have played some part at such a fantastic club. I would like to thank the manager, players and backroom staff at Celtic for all the support they have given me, and I would also like to thank the fans for their great support, particularly the support they gave to me during my recent illness. I will never forget that."
