Korea defy odds to beat Italy

In a repeat of their 1966 meeting in England the under-rated South Koreans beat their more illustrious Italian opponents to dump one of the pre-tournament favourites out in sensational style with a golden goal winner from Ahn Jung-hwan. Italy seemed to be heading for a quarter-final clash with Spain following Christian Vieri's opener after 18 minutes, but the co-hosts hit back, Irish style, with a goal two minutes from time to force an extra 30 minutes. Then, with just three minutes remaining before the tie would be decided by penalties, Ahn stepped up with a magnificent header to send the thousands of colourful Korean fans in the in Taejon's World Cup stadium into jubilation.
