Dodd signs new deal with Southampton

Southampton captain Jason Dood has signed a one-year extension to his contract at the St Mary's stadium. The new deal will keep the 31-year-old defender, who had just one year left on his existing agreement, at the club until 2004. Dodd signed the deal following talks with club chairman Rupert Lowe.

"It was all very straightforward. I went to see the chairman just to see what the situation was because I only had a year left. I am really pleased to have got it sorted because it gives me a bit of security and means I can focus totally on the football and play my natural game rather than trying to earn a new deal", said Dodd.

"I have spent my whole career with Southampton and I love the club, but there is no room for sentiment in football and being a long-time servant would not count for anything if I was not good enough. Things are looking good for the club right now and I am delighted to stay a part of it", he added.
