Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is planning to talk to Lazio defender Alessandro Nesta over a possible move to the premier league club. A number of clubs have shown interest in the highly-rated Nesta, who is set to start in the centre of defence for Italy when they open their World Cup campaign with a group G match against Ecuador on Monday.
Ferguson was quoted in the British media on Saturday as saying that he would wait for the World Cup to finish before approaching the 30-million pound ($43.6 million) rated player, who is also being targeted by Italian champions Juventus. Ferguson has made defensive reinforcements his priority after releasing Ronny Johnsen and Denis Irwin at the end of last season.
The Manchester United manager is keen on bolstering the centre of his defence by linking Nesta up with former French international Laurent Blanc, who is close to agreeing terms for a new one-year contract at the club.
"It's difficult to sign players with the World Cup on but we are interested in two or three," Ferguson said in Friday's Manchester Evening News. "Nesta's with Italy, but hopefully we will get something done before the start of the season. We are not over-confident, but we are going to work on it," he added.
