Birmingham trio shown the door

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce has given free transfers to Dele Adebola, Danny Sonner and Jon McCarthy as he builds his squad for the Premiership. Adebola, who went on loan to Oldham after recovering from a knee injury, is well down the pecking order of strikers at St Andrew's behind Geoff Horsfield, Tommy Mooney and Stern John.

Sonner has not played under Bruce while McCarthy, who has suffered two broken legs in two years, has played just a handful of games since the former Manchester United defender took over from caretaker duo Mick Mills and Jim Barron.

All three are out of contract at the start of next month, and Bruce is happy to let them leave on a Bosman free transfer. Bruce is expected to sit down with the club's board this week to discuss what funds are available to strengthen the squad for the top flight.
