Ryan Giggs has revealed that Manchester United's failure to reach this year's Champions’ League final was the low point of his career at Old Trafford. United’s 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen last week was not enough, after their 2-2 draw at home in the first leg.
For United only a collapse from Arsenal will prevent the Barclaycard Premiership title from going to the Gunners for the first time in four years. Now the 28-year-old winger has admitted the true depth of disappointment as United look set to end the season trophyless.
“To say this season has been a nightmare would be an understatement. Failure in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen last week was the low point in my 10-year career at Old Trafford. United have got the strongest squad I have ever known but we have let the manager, the supporters and ourselves down. And that is unforgivable”, said Giggs in a Sunday Mirror interview.
“The fact is that we have no divine right to win anything. You have to earn success and on that basis we deserve to finish the season empty-handed”, he added. The Welsh wizard conceded his performance in the semi-final had been sub-standard and said Everton, who face Arsenal on the last day of the season, were there last hope now.
“We had gone into the semi-final clashes with the Germans in great form but we never performed in either leg and got exactly what we deserved, nothing. I take a great deal of responsibility for that because, like the majority of United players, I didn't play well”, said Giggs.
