Controversial German star Stefan Effenberg's move to Manchester City has fallen through. City had been in negotiations with Effenberg, who is available on a free transfer from Bayern Munich at the end of the season, but now claim he will not be moving to Maine Road.
City are refusing to elaborate on the reasons why, but it is understood Effenberg's wage demands were a sticking point. It is believed the 33-year-old wanted £60,000-a-week to sign a two-year deal with the First Division champions, which is more than double what the current top earner at the club receives.
