McAllister appointed new City boss

Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister was today named as the new manager of Coventry City. The former Sky Blues player signed a three-year contract at Highfield and took over from former Swedish player-manager Roland Nilsson, who quit last week.

The 37-year-old former Scottish international played 119 matches at Highfield Road in his four seasons at the club after joining from Leeds in 1996. He left for Liverpool two-years ago on a free transfer and helped the Merseyside club to their most successful season since the late 80's. He played a vital role in the heart of the Anfield side, which won the treble of the FA Cup, Worthington Cup and UEFA Cup.

This season saw McAllister's first-team chances restricted and he earlier this week dropped a huge hint that his playing days were over and he was heading into management with his former club. "I have been on the telephone non-stop trying to organise things", he said. "I accept that, as a new manager, I am going to need the right help. Now I am waiting for certain things to fall into place and then we will take it from there", added McAllister.
