Golden goal to go

The 'golden goal' rule is to be scrapped by European football's governing body UEFA. The controversial method of deciding games in extra time will be replaced by a new system in all European club competitions next season. If a match is drawn after 90 minutes, 15 minutes of extra time will be played. If one team leads after that period, they will be declared the winners.

However, if at half-time in extra time there is no leader, the remaining 15 minutes will be played followed by a penalty shoot-out if the teams are still tied. UEFA have made the decision after consultation with top European coaches, who felt the system put too much pressure on players.

Liverpool completed the third leg of their cup treble thanks to a golden goal in last season's UEFA Cup final which ensured a 5-4 victory over Spanish side Alaves.
