Damien Duff declared that Blackburn were confident of beating the drop after his superb solo effort had inspired a 2-0 win over Southampton at Ewood Park last night. The Republic of Ireland midfielder put in another excellent display as Graeme Souness' men eased fears of relegation from the Barclaycard Premiership.
Rovers gained control in a dominant first half with a period of intense pressure leading to superb goals from Duff and Yordi, the latter's first for the club. And afterwards Duff said: "I didn't feel fresh today, especially in the second half, but we battled well today and just nicked it with two good goals."
"We've been dominating games all season and just giving away sloppy goals," Duff added on Sky Sports. "Of course we're confident of beating the drop. I experienced relegation with the club two years ago and I don't want to go through that again."
Duff's team-mate Craig Short targeted victories in Rovers' next two games – at home to Newcastle and Chelsea - as crucial in their survival battle. "Obviously we needed the win today. We know we've got to win these games. It was very tight, and Southampton played very well," Short said.
