Newcastle thrash Everton

Newcastle United came from behind to whip relegation-haunted Everton 6-2 at St James' Park today. The result maintains the Toon Army's ascendancy in the chase for a Champions League position, while Everton remain only four points above the drop zone.

The Toffees got off to a perfect start after just six minutes when Duncan Ferguson's speculative volley deceived Shay Given in the Newcastle goal. Alan Shearer equalised for the home side after thirteen minutes before Carl Cort put Newcastle in front two minutes later. Nicolas Alexandersson equalised for Everton with twelve minutes to go to half-time but that was to be the last hurrah for David Moyes' team.

In the second half it was all Newcastle and Andy O'Brien's 59th minute goal opened the floodgates. A Nolberto Solano double and a late goal from French defender Olivier Bernard sealed an emphatic victory for Bobby Robson's side.
