United seek FIFA intervention on Stam transfer

Manchester United have sought the intervention of FIFA in a bid to get cash-strapped Italian club Lazio to pay the £16million transfer fee for Dutch defender Jaap Stam. The Old Trafford club have called on FIFA's help after Lazio were late paying one instalment, and with just £4million received to date, United will be anxious to get assurances from the Rome club that they will meet further payments.

United's managing director David Gill confirmed: "We're talking to FIFA about how we get the money back." In another development, Stam has reportedly turned down a £10million move back to England to United's rivals Manchester City.
