A 10-man Republic of Ireland under-21 team beat Denmark 3-2 in a friendly at a packed Turner's Cross tonight. It was the first ever match played under lights at Cork City's ground and it drew a capacity crowd of eight thousand fans who were not disappointed.
The Republic of Ireland went 2-0 up with the goals from Celtic's Jim Goodwin after 20 minutes and Ben Burgess of Blackburn Rovers after 53. But with 17 minutes remaining in the game, Goodwin handled the ball after keeper Joe Murphy was beaten. The centre-back was sent-off and Denmark's Jesper Haakonsson scored the resulting penalty.
The Danes equalised in the 84th minute after a beautiful chip from Kenneth Larsen. However, Cork's Joe Gamble, who came on as a substitute in the second half, scored a last minute winner to secure a great victory for Don Givens' side.
