Beckenbauer backs Blatter

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has backed under-fire FIFA president Sepp Blatter and says he should remain on as head of soccer’s world governing body.

FIFA has been rocked with allegations of bribery and financial mismanagement, while Blatter is facing a fight to retain his position from the head of African football, Cameroon’s Issa Hayatou. But Beckenbauer has insisted Blatter is still the best man for the job.

“For me he is the favourite against Hayatou. After four year’s two Somalis are now saying that they were bribed for the Blatter vote. Why didn’t they say anything before? And the collapse of ISL (FIFA’s marketing partner) is not Blatter’s fault,” the former German player and manager told Bild daily.

The battle for the FIFA presidency will be decided at the organisations's congress on May 28-29 in Seoul.
