Barca’s title hopes fading fast

Barcelona coach Carles Rexach has admitted his team’s hopes of winning the Spanish league title are fading fast after their 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the Nou Camp yesterday. The result leaves Barcelona six points adrift of Real and Valencia at the top of the table and Rexach believes the chances of his side winning the title are disappearing rapidly.

"A draw at home to Real is not a good result and in my calculations this was a game we had to win. It would have been the end if they had won here after 19 years. We played poorly in the first half and they dominated us physically but we came back in the second and fought very hard. As a Barca fan I hope they never win here. The league has now become very difficult for us although we will still have to wait and see what happens in the rest of the season,” Rexach told reporters after the final whistle.

It could have been a whole lot worse for the home side after falling behind to a Zinedine Zidane goal after 39 minutes. But Rexach’s troops refused to be overawed and grabbed an equaliser through a long-range effort from Xavi with a half hour to go.
