Phil Thompson has bitten back at Frank de Boer and Patrick Kluivert following their comments regarding Liverpool’s style of play before last night’s Champions League game. Liverpool held the Catalans to a 0-0 draw in the Nou Camp and kept alive their chances of making the quarter-finals – something they will do if they beat Roma at Anfield next week.
But Thompson took offence to de Boer’s claims that Liverpool are a boring side and one he would never play for while Kluivert was quoted as saying they were a negative side. He hit back where it hurt after last night’s game though reminding the Dutch stars that they won't be travelling to this summer’s World Cup.
He said, “At first I must apologise to the Barcelona media and their players for playing so well, I know we are not supposed to be able to create chances, but we certainly created enough and fully deserved the draw, and I felt the win. What had been said before the game certainly motivated the players, nobody likes being criticised, particularly by players who will be in Disneyland this summer on their holidays rather than the World Cup in Japan.”
He went on, "It's going to be a very, very exciting game now against Roma. And it would have been a big disappointment for the boys had they not been able to put themselves into this position because they have worked so hard throughout the tournament. We've only lost one game of 13 in European competition this season and we deserve some reward for that."
