A Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hat-trick has helped Chelsea blitz Spurs for the second time in four days. Hasselbaink’s rampant display and a last-minute Frank Lampard goal helped Claudio Ranieri’s side to another 4-0 win over Glenn Hoddle’s Spurs after the Stamford Bridge side beat them by the same scoreline in the FA Cup last Sunday.
Hasselbaink took his tally to 27 goals for the season with strikes in the 24th, 69th and 81st minutes. Spurs were completely overrun and their cause wasn’t helped by the second half dismissal of Mauricio Taricco after a serious foul on Graeme Le Saux. The explosive Hasselbaink scored with his right foot, head and left foot while Lampard rounded off Spurs’ nightmare with a close range finish just before the final whistle. The result leaves Chelsea just five points behind Newcastle and keeps alive their hopes of snatching a Champions League spot.
In tonight’s other Premiership game, Blackburn climbed out of the relegation zone and extended Ipswich’s drop worries with a 2-1 win over George Burley’s side. Graeme Souness’ team were two up at half time through Republic of Ireland international Damien Duff and Andy Cole, and although Marcus Stewart gave Ipswich hope with a 55th minute goal, Blackburn held on for the three points. The result means the Ewood Park side leapfrog Bolton, Ipswich and Everton in the Premiership table and brings them two points above the relegation zone.
