Leeds draw another blank

Leeds United failed to score again today but despite the first-half sending off of defender Dominic Matteo, David O’Leary’s side salvaged a point in a 0-0 draw with Everton at Goodison Park. Leeds have now failed to score in more than six hours but today’s point still moved them up one place to fifth in the Premiership.

Matteo was dismissed six minutes before half-time for his second bookable offence, adding to Leeds’ defensive woes after captain Rio Ferdinand withdrew an hour before the game through injury. Swede Tobias Linderoth went close for Everton after the break before Leeds finally created some chances as the game moved into the latter stages.

Mark Viduka had a shot blocked in the 72nd minute before Leeds keeper Nigel Martyn denied Kevin Campbell twice. Substitute David Ginola came close to securing three points for the relegation-threatened Toffees in the dying seconds but his 25-yard shot shaved the post.

Everton are now four points above the relegation zone while Leeds remain 10 points adrift of a Champions League place.
