First Division Kilkenny City kept themselves in the promotion hunt with a fully deserved 3-1 win over faltering Sligo Rovers at Buckley Park on Wednesday night. The Cats opened the scoring just before the half-hour when Ciaran Quinn slotted home from close range to confirm his side's superiority in the first half. Ben Whelehan doubled the City's lead three minutes after the break when he headed home a Pat O'Toole corner, and Quinn grabbed his second on 65 minutes with a well taken effort having being put through by Peter Rogers.
City were well on top at this stage and could have extended their lead but for Sligo 'keeper Danny O'Leary, who brilliantly saved a 75th minute penalty from Rogers. Rovers did manage a late consolation goal from striker Sean Flannery, who headed home ten minutes from time, but it was too little too late for the visitors who look set for another season out of the top flight. Kilkenny, on the otherhand, have moved into third above Waterford on goal difference, just six points behind leaders Dublin City.
