Millwall boosted their push for promotion to the Premiership with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over fellow play-off hopefuls West Brom at the New Den on Tuesday night. The win moves The Lions into third place in the Nationwide First Division, leapfrogging the Baggies thanks to Tim Cahill's powerful header from Steven Reid's pin-point cross after only ten minutes. But Mark McGhee's side had to survive a scare with Neil Clement's penalty superbly kept out by goalkeeper Tony Warner after David Livermore upended Jordao.
Meanwhile, Youssef Chippo's goal eight minutes from time gave Coventry City a deserved 2-1 win over Walsall at Highfield Road to edge City into the First Division play-off places. David Thompson opened the scoring for Coventry in the 21st-minute goal only for David Holdsworth's header to give relegation-threatened Walsall a lifeline four minutes later, but Moroccan international Chippo sealed the victory with his superbly taken effort in the closing stages.
Elsewhere, just over 5,000 fans at Selhurst Park witnessed a dour scoreless draw between Wimbledon and Watford. Burnley's clash with Bradford at Turf Moor was called off just an hour before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.
In the Second Division, new Cardiff boss Lennie Lawrence got his Ninian Park reign off to the perfect start when a penalty from Dubliner Graeme Kavanagh just before half-time gave City a 1-0 home win over cash-strapped Bury.
