Schmeichel denies Sunderland link

Aston Villa goalkeeper Pete Schmeichel has scoffed suggestions that he is moving to Sunderland. Reports have been emanating from Villa Park that the Danish keeper is unhappy at the club and that he is on his way to replace compatriot Thomas Sorenson at the Stadium of Light.

"It's a fantastic story, and it's impressive the paper knows more about me than I do. I just want to say that I'm happy at Aston Villa. I promised the club to let them know about my future at the end of the season, and no more can be added.

"I can figure out the reason for the rumours. Everybody knows that my agent Paul Stretford is working together with Peter Reid in Sunderland and Walter Smith in Everton, and if one puts things together and guesses that now John Gregory has left Aston Villa, then I will also go. I wouldn't be surprised to read that I'm going to Derby, because John Gregory is there," the former Manchester United net-minder told Danish newspaper Politiken.
