Millwall move up to third

Millwall moved up to third place in the English first division today after a 2-1 win at mid-table Nottingham Forest. Fifth-placed Burnley failed to make significant ground on the leaders though after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Barnsley.

Paul Ifill put visitors Millwall ahead after seven minutes following a neat pass from Richard Sadlier and Tim Cahill doubled the lead just before halftime when he headed in from a corner. Millwall continued to dominate after the break but Christophe Kinet's free-kick against a post after an hour was the nearest they came to a third goal.

The hosts pulled one back with a Marlon Harewood penalty three minutes from time after Sean Dyche handled in the box, but the goal came too late to prevent Millwall going home with all three points.

Darren Barnard fired Barnsley into a sixth minute lead against promotion chasing Burnley at Oakwell. Gareth Taylor equalised seven minutes before the interval. Biggest win of the day came at Gresty Road where Coventry boosted their hopes of reaching the playoffs with a 6-1 away win at Crewe. Lee Hughes hit a hat-trick.

Manchester City, who host Preston on Sunday, top the table with 61 points, ahead on goal difference of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Thursday.
