Bellamy cautioned by police

Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy has been cautioned by Northumbria police after an allegation of assault involving a female student. The 22-year-old Welsh international was questioned by police and subsequently cautioned after the incident in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“As a result of police inquiries into an allegation of assault made by a 20-year-old student, police have questioned and cautioned Newcastle United footballer Craig Bellamy for the offence of common assault,” a statement by Northumbria Police said.

Newcastle have refused to be drawn on the matter but they did say players were expected to adhere to the club’s code of conduct: “We are aware of the allegations which have been made against certain of our players and shall be conducting our own internal investigation immediately. At present the club has nothing further to say on the matter.”

Bellamy, who joined Newcastle from Coventry at the start of this season, has scored nine Premiership goals this season.
