Houllier will return as manager

Liverpool confirmed today that Gerard Houllier will return to the club in no other capacity but manager. Houllier is still recovering from major heart surgery but is believed to be on course to make his comeback in early March. Although reports in the press this morning claim the Frenchman may return to the club in a different position, a spokesman for the Anfield side denied these rumours.

"This is just more unhelpful speculation. Gerard did not say anything about coming back in a different role, he made it very clear he would return as Liverpool manager," said Ian Cotton regarding a short speech Houllier made at a local awards ceremony last night. "He did not say that was what he would be doing, he was just explaining the wide variety of things that had been said about him. It has been totally misinterpreted," added Cotton.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry also confirmed that Houllier would be returning as the club's manager. "We are getting tired of some people saying Gerard is never coming back and equally tired of others saying he is coming back tomorrow. He'll be back when he's ready and it will be a matter of weeks rather than months," he added.
