O'Shea dreams of making World Cup

Manchester United defender John O'Shea is hopeful that he can get enough games with the Premiership champions during the rest of this season and force his way into Mick McCarthy's World Cup squad. The 21-year-old centre-half made his debut for the Republic of Ireland in a friendly against Croatia last August and has admitted he would relish the chance to travel with the squad to Japan and South Korea next summer.

"It's very important for me, and I hope to be in the senior team for Ireland," he said in an interview with MUTV. "It could be a possibility if I get a few more games. I think that could sway the decision in my favour. You never know. It's still far away, but I still have it in the back of my mind. It's going to be a great World Cup, and to be involved in it would be a dream come true."

O'Shea returned to first team action with United on Tuesday evening when he came on as a substitute during the 4-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. It was his first appearance since he injured his groin against Middlesbrough before Christmas.
