Middlesbrough have pulled out of negotiations to sign Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke. It is believed Yorke's wage demands proved too great for the Premiership club after the United forward reportedly demanded twice his current salary for a move to the Riverside. Boro had been in talks with the 30-year-old striker for several days after agreeing a fee of £6.2m with United but manager Steve McClaren today pulled the plug on the deal as both sides failed to agree personal terms.
"We were able to offer him what we believe was a very attractive package to join us. Unfortunately, it would appear the offer did not meet Dwight's aspirations. The club has therefore withdrawn its bid," a club spokesman revealed.
It now remains to be seen if United's desired move for West Ham's Italian striker Paulo di Canio will go through before tomorrow night's Champions League deadline, as United boss Alex Ferguson revealed last night that Yorke's situation was holding up the completion of a deal to bring the Hammers captain to Old Trafford.
