Everton's Portuguese international defender Abel Xavier is poised to join Merseyside rivals Liverpool. The 29-year-old was expected to return to Portugal after being put on the Goodison transfer list last week.
Benfica and Porto were believed to be leading the chase for his signature - but the player today visited Anfield's Melwood training ground and discussed a move across Stanley Park. A fee of around £800,000 is expected to see the Mozambique-born player – free to leave Goodison for nothing at the end of the season - follow Nicky Barmby to Anfield.
