Charlton suffer shock defeat - FA Cup round-up

Charlton suffered an FA Cup giantkilling at The Valley this afternoon when they went down 2-1 to First Division Walsall. A Jorge Leitao double and a penalty save from Walsall's outstanding keeper James Walker helped the Division One club to a memorable fourth round victory.

The Portuguese striker was recalled to the starting line-up by new boss Colin Lee, who has only been in charge for three days. But Leitao repaid his faith with two excellent strikes in each half to send Alan Curbishley's side tumbling out of the competition. Graham Stuart gave the home side a glimmer of hope towards the end with his late goal but the hero turned villain when he failed to convert from the penalty spot after John Robinson was fouled by Darren Wrack.

West Brom once again defeated Premiership opposition to book their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup but this time, against Leicester, it came courtesy of a hotly-disputed penalty converted by Neil Clement. Clement fired home the spot-kick after Foxes captain Matt Elliot was adjudged by referee Clive Wilkes to have brought down Andy Johnson. This result follows on from the Baggies win over Sunderland at the Stadium Of Light in the previous round and piled on the misery for Leicester, who now have only Premiership survival to fight for.

Chelsea's game with West Ham at Stamford Bridge got the go-ahead following a late pitch inspection and top scorer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink did not need long to fire home his 20th goal of the season. The Dutchman put the home side ahead with a curling shot from the edge of the area on 21 minutes. However, Frederic Kanoute's well-taken effort with only seven minutes to go means the two London clubs will have to do it all over again to decide who will make it into the last 16.

Kevin Campbell's double strike helped end Leyton Orient's hopes of an upset as Everton romped to a 4-1 win at Goodison Park. Orient defender David McGhee's own goal on 12 minutes gifted the Toffees the lead with Duncan Ferguson making it 2-0 after excellent work from Paul Gascoigne. The Division Three side were back in the tie when Scott Canham scored nine minutes from the break but before the half-time whistle sounded, Everton had their two-goal advantage restored through Campbell. The former Arsenal striker killed off any hopes of a comeback for Orient when he grabbed his second 10 minutes from the end.

Preston came from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Deepdale. Peter Ndlovu fired the Blades ahead from close range after 14 minutes but substitute Richard Cresswell smashed home an equaliser eight minutes into the second half. Wales international Robert Page was then adjudged to have handled in the area and Graham Alexander smashed home the resulting 71st-minute penalty.

Crewe twice battled back against Rotherham at Millmoor to book their place in the fifth-round draw with a hard-earned 4-2 win in South Yorkshire and there was no giant-killing at Bootham Crescent where cash-strapped York went down 2-0 against Premiership millionaires Fulham. Steed Malbranque put the Cottagers ahead and £11million striker Steve Marlet put the game beyond York's reach five minutes from time. Andy Cole's fourth goal in six games gave Worthington Cup finalists Blackburn a 1-0 win at Millwall. The England striker bundled home an 86th-minute cross from Alan Mahon.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's clash with Bolton Wanderers at White Hart Lane was postponed just after 2pm this afternoon following heavy rain in North London while the tie between Gillingham and Bristol Rovers was also called off following an early-afternoon pitch inspection because of a waterlogged pitch.
