FAI back joint Euro 2008 bid

The FAI have released a statement today confirming they will, if asked, support a bid by the Scottish FA to host the 2008 European Championships. FAI delegates decided unanimously at a Board of Management meeting to lend their support if the Scots invite the Irish to come on board for a joint bid to host the finals.

The FAI expect that they would host one quarter of the games in the finals through the availability of Lansdowne Road and the proposed Campus Ireland stadium. Applications to stage the 2008 finals don't have to be lodged with UEFA until February 28 and the FAI are expecting the Scots to invite them to launch a joint bid before the end of this month.

Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed today that the United States will be Ireland's opponents in the international friendly to take place at Lansdowne Road on April 17. The last time the two countries met was in the Nike Cup in America in June 2000 and that match finished 1-1.
