Liverpool have signed Nicolas Anelka on loan until the end of the season. The Paris St Germain striker has joined the Anfield club pending a medical and Liverpool have an option to buy the Frenchman at the end of the season. Anelka made his reputation with Arsenal before moving to Real Madrid for £22million and could make his debut against the Gunners at Anfield on Sunday.
The switch was announced on both clubs' websites. Anelka returned to Paris from Real Madrid last season after failing to settle in Spain. He has reportedly been at odds with PSG coach Luis Fernandez in recent weeks.
The 22-year-old Anelka returns to England after playing for Arsenal from 1997-1999. He left the London club in acrimonious circumstances on the way to Madrid. PSG said that Liverpool, coached by Frenchman and former PSG manager Gerard Houllier, would have an option for a permanent transfer at the end of the loan.
