World Cup windfall for FAI

The FAI will earn just under £2.5 million from Ireland's opening group matches at next Summer's World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea. FIFA’s executive met today and afterwards revealed that the World Cup winners stand to make over 12 million Swiss francs. All 32 finalists taking part in the finals will benefit from a 51% increase in FIFA payouts compared to the 1998 World Cup finals in France.

In effect, the new plan approved today means that a team’s progress in the tournament will see it earn 1.5 million Swiss francs for each first round game, increasing on a sliding scale up to 2.5 million Swiss francs for the winner and 2.25 million for the losing finalists.
