Sander Westerveld has completed his move to Real Sociedad, from Liverpool, for £3 million. He has put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at the Spanish club until 2005, and ends a nightmare spell in the Anfield reserves. Westerveld fell out of favour at Liverpool earlier this season, following a mistake against Bolton that contributed to their 2-1 loss.
He was an ever-present in the treble winning side of last season, but found himself fifth choice, following the signings of Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland. The Dutch keeper said: “I am very happy because everything has worked out positively. I have come here to work hard and to help, amongst others things, Real Sociedad move up the table."
He continued: "After my time at Liverpool it's a very significant challenge for me coming to a team like Real Sociedad, one of the historic teams in the Spanish league, without doubt the strongest in the world at the moment." Westerveld will be hoping to get his career back on track for the Basque side, who are managed by Anfield legend John Toshack. They are currently second from bottom of the Primera Liga after a 3-1 defeat at Real Madrid on Saturday.
