Rovers, Kilkenny progress to third round

Shamrock Rovers, Monaghan United, Kilkenny City, Cobh Ramblers, Limerick FC, Cherry Orchard and Sligo Rovers all progress to the third round of the Carlsberg FAI Cup while St Kevins and Rockmount play a replay next Sunday.

Cork City 0-1 Shamrock Rovers

An own-goal from Alan Bennett ensured victory for Shamrock Rovers over Cork City at Turners Cross this afternoon. In bizarre fashion in the fifth minute, Bennett looped the ball all the way from midfield over goalkeeper Michael Devine to hand Rovers the lead. Rovers worked hard to keep City at bay and the work-rate paid off with a place in the third round.

Monaghan United 2-1 Athlone Town

Monaghan Town stole a rare victory over Athlone Town this afternoon at Century Homes Park to go into the hat for the third round. Athlone struck first with a goal from Stephen Mullen shot from inside the area. Athlone were on top at that stage but a mix-up in the visitors defence in the 22nd minute let in Darren McKenna who shot low beyond the dive of the Town keeper. McKenna added another from six yards out on the stroke of half-time to seal victory adding to Athlone’s disappointing season.

Kilkenny City 2-1 Waterford United

Kilkenny City scored a late, late winner to book their place in the next round with a win over Waterford United at Buckley Park this afternoon. Mark Revins put the home side ahead in the seventh minute following a pass from Philip Hughes. In the second half, Waterford went in search of an equaliser but Kilkenny ‘keeper Gareth Burn made a succession of brilliant saves to deny Waterford on each occasion. In the 90th minute, Gary Dempsey finally got the equaliser for Waterford. However three minutes into added time, City’s Philip Hughes and United’s Davy Walsh were both sent-off following a centre-circle punch–up. Kilkenny then gained possession, and Ben Whelehan headed home the winner for the home-side five minutes into injury time.

CYM Terenure 0-1 Cobh Ramblers

A second–half goal from Willie Bruton was enough to send Cobh Ramblers through to the third round at Capco Park this afternoon. After 75 minutes of a poor second half, Mark Clifford’s long ball found Bruton who beat Raymond O’Malley and sent a low diagonal shot past Whelan for the winner.

Glebe North 1-2 Limerick FC

Limerick progress to the third round following a well-deserved victory over Glebe North at Market Green. The non-league side played with the wind in the first half but it was the visitors who took the lead after 18 minutes with a goal by Derek McCarthy. However the home-side levelled after 41 minutes with a Rory Kerr goal but Limerick got the winner in the 78th minute when a low drive from John Whyte beat keeper Gary Lester.

St Kevins’ Boys 1-1 Rockmount

St Kevins forced a replay with Rockmount, scheduled for White Church, Cork on Sunday, following a 1-1 draw at the AUL Complex today. Rockmount opened the scoring in the 50th minute when they were awarded a penalty after a foul on Thomas Long. Len Downey struck it beautifully, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. However Kevins continued to press forward and their efforts were rewarded in the 60th minute. Declan Hickey’s shot looked to be heading goal-wards but it rebounded off the upright, Keith Maher collected and drilled it past Pat Cassidy in the Rockmount goal.

Cherry Orchard 2-0 Garda

Non-league side, Cherry Orchard, are through to the third round of the Carlsberg FAI Cup with a 2-0 victory over Garda at De La Salle today. The first Orchard goal came from the penalty spot three minutes before the break when their keeper Brendan Kennedy sent Ronan O’Dee the wrong way. Garda were reduced to 10 men when Matt Buttner was sent off after two bookable offences after 58 minutes. Orchard scored their second goal 13 minutes later courtesy of David O’Brien.
