Waterford United boss resigns

Waterford United boss Paul Power has announced his resignation from his post on the eve of the club's eircom League First Division clash with table-toppers Dublin City FC. The surprise decision, which was effective immediately, was notified to the club yesterday without any prior notice or warning and despite the fact that he reached an agreement with the board a month ago on his future.

Power gave no reason for his departure but it is certainly not down to the team's current form as Waterford are enjoying a run of eight games unbeaten, which included a 5-0 home defeat of Finn Harps. The club has also enjoyed a good run of results in the League Cup where they are through to the quarter-finals after beating Kilkenny City and Drogheda United. Therefore, Power's sudden departure is most unexpected considering it comes at a time when the Blues have looked their strongest so far this season.

"Obviously, this is a very disappointing and unexpected development for the club," explained Chairman, Ger O’Brien. "We are shocked at the decision given that it leaves Waterford United without a Manager for the immediate future. These next ten days will be important for us and along with the players, Michael Welsh and fellow Directors, we will get on with the business of playing and remain determined to extend our current unbeaten record against Dublin City."
