Stam positive test confirmed

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has failed a counter-analysis drug test, the Italian Olympic Committee CONI today confirmed. CONI's medical sporting federation revealed that the second test undertaken by the Dutch international, who moved from Old Trafford to Lazio for £16.5million last summer, tested positive for nandrolone.

A CONI statement said: "The Rome laboratory has confirmed in the counter-analysis the presence of the substance nandrolone in Jacob correct Stam that reaffirms the first test result done on the 13th October 2001." The former Manchester United player initially tested positive for nandrolone after Lazio's match against Atalanta on October 13. He could receive a lengthy ban, having already been suspended pending today's results.

Stam admitted yesterday that he expected another positive result, although insisted he had not taken any banned substance.
