Historical enemies Turkey and Greece have applied to jointly host the Euro 2008 soccer championships. The two countries nearly went to war in 1996 over deserted Aegean islets but relations have improved in recent years following a series of catastrophic earthquakes in both countries in 1999.
"We are witnessing history," said Turkish Football Federation deputy chairman Ata Aksu. "The deadline for applications to UEFA is November 20. We will hand in our official bid on November 19."
The Greek Federation chief said the joint application was more than a symbol. "We do not just think of being candidates together. We will work to the end in the best way and we will win the organisation," he said Vassilis Gagatsis.
Some tension still remains between the nations, particularly over the divided Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Some top Greek - and Greek Cypriot - players have objected to the bid but the Greek government has warmly welcomed it. "We see it as a positive step towards promoting friendship and collaboration between the two peoples," said Greek government spokesman Christos Protopappas.
