Stam still a United supporter

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has said he takes no pleasure from seeing their defensive frailties exposed in recent weeks. Despite being unceremoniously dumped by the Old Trafford club, the £16 million Lazio defender says that the fortunes of his former employers still mattered to him.

"I take no satisfaction in what's happening at all. I'm a United supporter and I want them to do well. I still like United very much and I hate it when they lose a game," said Stam.

Despite an early exit from the Champions League, Lazio have still managed to keep six clean sheets in the last 11 matches – largely due to Stam's presence. "It's nice that people think I'm a good player again after some doubted me, but it's not like I need to prove to United I'm still a top defender," added the Dutch defender.

Stam also had words of support for United central defender Wes Brown, who has been criticised for a number of errors during a faltering Premiership campaign. "He's very young and he's got to keep going like he is, concentrating on his football and ignoring what other people are saying. Wes can be a very big player for United."
