Keane comes through full training session

Roy Keane gave Mick McCarthy a boost today by completing a full training session ahead of Ireland's World Cup qualifying play-off against Iran at Lansdowne Road on Saturday. With the first leg just two days away, Keane's recovery will be a significant plus for the Irish who are hoping to book their place at a major finals for the first time since USA '94.

There had been growing suggestions that the inspirational midfielder will have to battle through the pain barrier against Iran, and while that remains a distinct possibility, his participation this morning will come as a relief to Irish soccer fans everywhere. The Corkman is believed to be suffering from the same injury that kept Tottenham's Irish full-back Steve Carr out for several months, and it is possible he could face a similar operation in the United States to resolve the problem after the play-offs.

McCarthy is adamant that 30-year-old Keane will play a central role in both games against Iran even though he's missed the last five matches for Manchester United. Old Trafford manager Alex Ferguson has given the all-clear for Keane to play in both games, and the Irish captain arrived in Dublin this morning following intensive treatment in Manchester this week.
