Rookie Nilsson wins monthly manager award

Coventry boss Roland Nilsson has been named as the Nationwide Manager of the Month for October. Nilsson has put the Sky Blues back in contention for promotion following an unbeaten run of eleven matches. New Southampton boss Gordon Strachan left Highfield Road in September following a poor start to the season. Last night's 2-2 draw with Preston moved Coventry up into second in the table after four wins and two draws in October.

Nilsson praised the contribution of his players to the rapid change in the club's fortunes. "I'm really pleased about the award but it's not just about what I've done. I think what we have achieved has been a team effort and this award belongs to the team and the coaching staff so I can't take all the credit," said the Swede.

Brentford manager Steve Coppell won the Division Two award after five out of five Nationwide League wins last month. Paul Sturrock took the Division Three award for the second month running after Plymouth's four wins and a draw. Dagenham and Redbridge boss Garry Hill clinched the Nationwide Conference award after four wins and two draws in October.
