Leeds United jumped three points clear at the top of the English premier league today after a recovering from a goal down to beat Ipswich Town 2-1 at Portman Road. Marcus Stewart headed Ipswich into a first-half lead but Leeds levelled through Robbie Keane and grabbed all three points when Ipswich's Mark Venus diverted a Harry Kewell cross into his own net with four minutes left.
Leeds now have 17 points from seven games, three points more than Arsenal and champions Manchester United who are second and third respectively.
Goals by John Arne Riise and Danny Murphy helped Liverpool to an impressive 2-0 victory at Newcastle United in the premier league today. Norwegian Riise intercepted a poor Rob Lee pass, jinked past a defender and lashed a left-footed shot high into the net past Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given after only three minutes.
With four minutes remaining, Murphy made sure of the points, streaking clear after a one-two with Robbie Fowler and firing low into the net. The win lifted Liverpool's points tally to 12, two less than leading trio Arsenal, Manchester United and Leeds.
In the day's other early game, west London rivals Chelsea and Fulham had to settle for a point apiece after their first top-flight meeting since 1967 ended 1-1. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink put Chelsea ahead in the first half at Craven Cottage, but Barry Hayles equalised soon after the interval to earn newly promoted Fulham a point
Hasselbaink, who had earlier hit the crossbar, collected a Boudewijn Zenden pass and calmly drove the ball past Edwin van der Sar to give the visitors a 32nd-minute lead. Fulham levelled 11 minutes into the second period when Louis Saha's header hit the post and Hayles snapped up the rebound. Chelsea had midfielder Slavisa Jokanovic sent off nine minutes from time for a second bookable offence.
