Dundalk up to sixth position after win

Derry’s hopes of moving into third place in the eircom Premier League table were thwarted by Dundalk who won 1-0 at Oriel Park tonight. The all-important goal arrived five minutes into the second half. Jonathan Prizeman’s drive from 25 yards took a deflection, Russell Payne flapped at it and Ger Robinson raced in to tap-in from close range.

However, Derry played their part in what was a very entertaining game. Derek Philips and Padraig Moran had chances while Liam Coyle’s goalbound effort was cleared off the line. After that, there was a sense that this was not going to be Derry’s night and that was confirmed three minutes from time when Jamie Hughes was taken down in the box and a penalty awarded but Tommy McCallion’s disappointing effort was saved by John Connolly.
