Villa pile on the woe for Southampton

Southampton stayed bottom of the English premier league after losing 3-1 at home to Aston Villa tonight. The home side, £8.1 million richer after selling Dean Richards to Spurs last week, badly missed the departed defender's presence.

George Boateng fired Villa into a ninth-minute lead and Juan Pablo Angel made it 2-0 six minutes later after exchanging passes with Lee Hendrie and Dion Dublin. Marian Pahars pulled a goal back by heading home a Kevin Davies cross just before the break.

Southampton were reduced to 10 men on 51 minutes when Rory Delap was red-carded for tripping Hassan Kachloul. Parity was restored five minutes later when Dublin was dismissed after clashing with Tahar El Khalej. Mustapha Hadji headed in a Hendrie cross to make it 3-1 12 minutes from time.
