Monaghan and Longford share the spoils

Monaghan United picked up only their second point of the season at Flancare Park tonight as Longford Town brought a miserable week to an end with another disappointing result in the eircom Premier Division. Longford dominated proceedings for the most part but Monaghan could have stolen all three points as time and again they caught the Longford defence napping.

After being outplayed in an eventful opening half, Monaghan improved considerably on the resumption and were rewarded just 13 minutes in with Brian Mooney played an excellent ball into the path of Trevor Vaughan and his finish was superb. Longford didn't waste time with their response and Stuart Byrne headed them back on terms in the 71st minute after Alan Kirby's corner found the midfielder totally unmarked inside the Monaghan penalty area.

Meanwhile, there was something of an upset in the eircom First Division after Finn Harps' six game unbeaten run came to an end when they lost 2-1 at home to Waterford United. Kilkenny City also lost at home 2-0 to Sligo Rovers while Drogheda United defeated Cobh Ramblers 1-0.
