UEFA suspend O'Neill for one match

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill was suspended for one match by UEFA yesterday following his sending-off during their Champions League defeat to Juventus in Turin.

O'Neill was furious on Tuesday when Juventus were awarded a controversial last-minute penalty, converted for a 3-2 win, and was ordered into the stands after remonstrating against German referee Hellmut Krug.

UEFA said he had been dismissed "for dissent directed at match officials." O'Neill can only watch their next match, against Porto, from the stands.

In a separate decision, UEFA dismissed an appeal by Celtic against the yellow card handed out to defender Joos Valgaeren in the 89th minute.

UEFA said protests could not be lodged against factual decisions taken by the referee in application of the laws of the game and the yellow card would stand.
