UCD snatch draw at Derry with late goal

Ciaran Martyn rescued a scarcely deserved point for UCD when he slotted home in injury time to force a 1-1 draw with Derry City at The Brandywell this evening. The UCD midfielder scored in the first minute of added time to cancel out Liam Coyle's opener for the home side and bring to an end City's 100% home record.

An utterly forgettable first half ended scoreless, but the second half sparked to life on the 48th minute when Coyle hit the net for City's opener. The veteran Derry striker was in the right place at the right time to slot home Tommy McCallion's right wing cross to give the home side a deserved lead. Both Coyle and McCallion had opportunities to extend City's lead, but Derry failed to add to their tally and they paid the penalty in stoppage time.

With the final whistle drawing near, a ball from midfield broke to Player/Manager Paul Doolin who prodded the ball forward to Martyn inside the box. The Sligo born midfielder found space to shoot home past Russell Payne to earn the Students a draw and an unlikely point, which moves them to within a point of Derry and above Bray into eighth in the eircom Premier Division.
