Gianluca Vialli admitted he had been forced to risk everything to keep Watford in the Worthington Cup after their 3-2 win at Bristol City. Trailing 2-0 after 55 minutes, Vialli sent on strikers Marcus Gayle and Tommy Smith to pep up his shot-shy attack - and saw the First Division side hit back dramatically to win with two last-gasp goals.
"We made a terrible start to the second half and it was clearly time to risk everything. The two players who went on did very well and we started to get a finishing product to our good approach play," Vialli said. "I never gave up believing that we could win because if you do that it can get through to your players."
Elsewhere, two goals from Deon Burton and one from Giorgi Kinkladze secured Derby's 3-0 victory over Third Division Hull at Pride Park.
Substitute Craig Bellamy plundered an extra-time hat-trick to send Newcastle into the Worthington Cup third round with a 4-1 win over Brentford. The Welshman struck on 108, 118 and 120 minutes to finally end the challenge of brave Brentford, who had taken a 17th-minute lead through Lloyd Owusu. Shola Ameobi scored the first goal for Newcastle with 59 minutes gone.
Blackburn scored a 2-0 win over Oldham courtesy of goals from Janise and Dunning.
