Doherty red card rescinded by FA

Tottenham defender Gary Doherty's controversial red card issued in his club's 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park last week has been rescinded by the FA after match referee David Elleray admitted he made a mistake. The FA revealed today that Elleray admitted his error in sending off the Irish centre-back for a challenge on striker Kevin Campbell in his match report.

However, Elleray is standing by his decision to show red to Doherty's Spurs team-mate Gus Poyet. The schoolmaster did not recommend in his report any action should be taken over the sending off of Poyet. Because Tottenham have appealed the sending-off, the issue will now have to go before the FA's video panel.
