Liverpool missed out on two awards at UEFA's annual awards gala dinner in Monte Carlo last night but the club's fans were jointly awarded the supporters of the year award for their behaviour at the UEFA Cup final. The Liverpool fans along with their Alaves counterparts were singled out for their sporting behaviour in Dortmund during the thrilling 5-4 encounter between the two clubs.

However, neither manager Gerrard Houllier or midfield veteran Gary McAllister picked up the award in their respective categories. Houllier lost out the UEFA coach of the year award to Bayern Munich's Ottmar Hitzfeld while McAllister lost out on the most valuable player award to Munich's Stefan Effenberg.

Bayern's Oliver Kahn made it a hat-trick of awards for his club when he won the best goalkeeper award, while Valencia's Roberto Ayala was named best defender. Valencia's former star Gaizka Mendieta, now with Lazio, was named best midfielder while best striker was Real Madrid's Raul.

Liverpool are in Monaco for tonight's Super Cup final against Champions League winners Bayern Munich. That match can be seen live on Network Two with coverage beginning at 7:30pm.
