Celtic were beaten 1-0 by Ajax Amsterdam tonight but still reached the Champions League group phase for the first time with a 3-2 aggregate victory. Celtic, who swept to a 3-1 victory in the first leg a fortnight ago, applied the early pressure that included a Henrik Larsson header over the Dutch bar.
But Ajax rocked the hosts with a goal in the 30th minute, Brazilian striker Wamberto working a one-two on the edge of the box before shooting past the Celtic keeper.
The Dutch piled on the pressure in the second half but failed to break down the Scottish champions' defence.
