Carr insists Spurs need more signings

Stephen Carr has called on Tottenham to bring in big-name signings to boost the club's prospects next season. Boss Glenn Hoddle has already dipped in the transfer market over the close season by snapping up veterans Teddy Sheringham and Gus Poyet, as well as bringing in Yugoslav defender Goran Bunjevcevic.

And England midfielder Darren Anderton recently committed himself to the club by signing a new four-year deal. But Republic of Ireland international Carr - who has hinted that he may have to follow Sol Campbell out of White Hart Lane if his ambitions do not look like being met - wants to see some more new faces arrive at the club before the start of the new Premiership campaign next month.

Speaking on his personal website on www.icons.com, Carr admitted: "Spurs have been relatively quiet in the transfer market so far and I don't think three new players is going to be enough. Gus and Teddy are both proven performers who know what it takes to win silverware, but I still feel we need more new players if we are to genuinely strengthen the squad enough to be able to cope with the kind of injury list which we had last season. The top teams have huge squads these days and Spurs have to look to buy more if we are to have any hope of competing."

These days you need to spend £10 million to £15 million on individual players just to keep pace with the Premiership's top sides and Spurs haven't done that yet. I know the new season hasn't started, but I'm sure the fans would like to see one or two big names come in to complement the signings of Gus and Teddy. We've got to show we have the ambition to move forward and these days the only way to do that is investing big on new signings.

Carr, meanwhile, also feels it will be almost impossible for Tottenham to replace Campbell. The England defender walked away from White Hart Lane on a free transfer at the end of last season and earlier this month signed a lucrative deal with their north London rivals Arsenal. And Carr, who himself has been the subject of transfer speculation over the summer, feels the void left by Campbell's departure will be hard to fill.

Carr continued: "I think it will be almost impossible for us to replace him. He has been such a massive presence in the team for so long and it will be hard to adapt to playing without him. Players of his quality do not come on to the market every day and there's no doubt he will be missed badly."
